When you say he made a straight with an 8 gapper, surely you mean he just hit a 4 card straight on the table?
If not then i think simple logic tells you he didnt...
And your big stack on the table, the other big stack is in the big blind so its fairly likely he will fold to your raise unless he has a big hand. You can justify raising there no matter what your cards are if you feel you can steal the blinds and have the right table image.
